The Sublime

The Metropolitan Museum New York had a seminal exhibition on Caspar David Friedrich that for the first time allowed me to see the bulk of his paintings in context. The develpment of Friedrich’s aproach to landscapes is striking, starting from sketches and ink in his Copenhagen time, to the large format oil that made him famous.
